Rosie Reviews Sneak Peeks: The Forbidden Wish and A Gathering of Shadows

The Forbidden Wish

Title: The Forbidden Wish

Author: Jessica Khoury

Publisher: Razorbill

Genre: Fantasy

Source: Ebook from NetGalley

A retelling of Aladdin’s tale, The Forbidden Wish does something a little different. In this, the main character is the jinni, Zahra, who has been trapped in her lamp for hundreds of years when Aladdin finds her. Things take a turn when the King of the Jinn offers her a chance to get the one thing she has always wanted – her freedom.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I have not heard of a book that retells this tale from the jinni’s perspective so this was quite a refreshing take on things. Zahra is a lovely character that you can really get into the head of and the other characters are both recognisable to those who love the Disney movie but also completely different with their own spin on things.

I am not sure how close this book is to the original tale, especially since this is only a sneak peek and I have not read the original, but it is beautifully written nonetheless, with excellent descriptions and the ability to make you completely curious about how the story will turn out. The author has definitely put her own twist on a well-loved tale.

The Forbidden Wish will be released on the 23rd February

A Gathering of Shadows

  Title: A Gathering of Shadows

Author: V.E. Schwab

Publisher: Macmillan-Tor/Forge

Genre: Fantasy

Source: Ebook from NetGalley

A Gathering of Shadows is the sequel to A Darker Shade of Magic, one of the best books I read last year. This book was even better than the first. More than anything it was great being back in this world, with the three Londons and Kell and Lila. Schwab makes it feel like you are coming back home, to a place you know and love.

The characters in this book, in just the sneak peek I read, were already more fleshed out and intriguing. They were all delightful to read and this time around, knowing who they are already, you can really see where they are coming from, pretty much from the first word you read.

The section I read was full of surprises, so I imagine the rest of the book is full of twists and turns that you don’t see coming and I am really excited to see where it goes. The magic system is brilliant, and you learn more about how it works in this book but in a way that is fascinating to read. Not to mention there are pirates and who doesn’t love pirates?

A Gathering of Shadows will be released on 23rd February.
