I Review ‘Pandemonium’ by Lauren Oliver

The second book in the Delirium trilogy, ‘Pandemonium’ follows Lena as she starts her new life in the Wilds, far away from the world she grew up in. Here there is a fight for survival, emotions run freely, and the resistance is hard at work to bring down the society that condemns love.

With Alex gone, Lena spends a lot of her first few weeks in the Wilds suffering from nightmares of the escape and must learn to live her life without the man she gave up her old life to be with. Enter Julian – her mission. As part of the resistance, Lena is tasked with keeping an eye on Julian as a mass protest goes terribly wrong.

The book is set in two timelines. The first is Lena just after her crossing, delirious with a fever running wild. In this story, Lena struggles to fit in with her new life and must fit to earn the trust and respect of those around her. In the second timeline, Lena is back within the walls, working with the resistance to bring down the DFA. This is a stark contrast from the first story line and it is fascinating to read as they weave through the book, showing Lena’s growth in two stages.

I really enjoyed this book. There are times when I do get a little annoyed with Lena as she mourns Alex – a lot of the mourning comes across as moping and moaning; but her character growth more than makes up for it. The other characters are also incredibly well written – they feel realistic and you can sense there are histories behind them that you will never quite find out about.

Both plots are exciting, and will keep you reading to find out what happens. A couple of elements do stretch the suspense of disbelief, notably how Julian and Lena’s escape came about (if you read it, you’ll know what I mean), since it relies on a couple of coincidences and lucky happenings.

Still, it was an excellent second book, and I give it a rating of 4/5.
