The book that came before the film; ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ is a continuation of Hannibal Lecter’s story. While the first book, ‘Red Dragon’ centred around a Will Graham and his attempts to solve a case with the occasional help of Lecter, this book features Lecture in a much larger role and Graham is only mentioned.
While I did enjoy the change in focus, with Clarice Starling taking over the role of main character, I found it hard to relate to her at first. I also felt that, while the primary case was interestingly gruesome, it was overshadowed by the interactions between Starling and Lecter which I was far more engrossed with and were unfortunately too few for my liking.
Regardless, the novel was thrilling with a serial killer whose grotesque murders sent a shiver down the spine. There were instances which made me pause, but the suspense-filled ending certainly made up for it.
